In this article we will briefly discuss the topic of jailbreaking iOS devices and also show you how to jailbreak an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 6 through 6.1.2.

What is a Jailbreak?

Jailbreaking refers to freeing a device from limitations that have been imposed by Apple (breaking it out of its “jail”) and therefore jailbreak will remove those limitations on Apple’s iPhones, iPads, iPods or Apple TV (2nd generation). As a result, jailbreaking gives you full access to the iOS system, meaning that you will be able to download apps, extensions, themes etc. that are unavailable through the official Apple App Store.
Jailbroken devices can still use the iTunes the App Store and other normal functions like sending messages or making phone calls, but restoring a jailbroken device with iTunes will remove the Jailbreak.

Reasons for jailbreaking

Many people think that jailbreaking is only about downloading and installing pirated iOS apps. Even though there are certainly many users who only jailbreak their device for the purpose of getting pirated apps, the initial reason jailbreaking exists is not piracy.
Some of the reasons for jailbreaking an iOS device are:

• To go beyond the limits of what Apple allows and challenge the status quo
  
• Improve and re-think iOS features and make iOS evolve
  
• Download and use of programs that have not been approved by Apple
  
• Get extensions and customizations for iOS and other apps
  
• Customization of the iOS interface (themes)
  
• For developing purposes through access to the filesystem etc.

Jailbreaking is perfectly legal and there is even an annual conference on the topic of Jailbreak held in the United States.

How to jailbreak iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch?

If you want to try it out by yourself, make sure to be prepared!
These are the things you need:

• Download evasi0n from: http://evasi0n.com/
  
• A computer that meets the minimum requirements such as running at least Windows XP, OS X 10.6 or Linux x86_64
  
• An iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through iOS 6.1.2, this will be automatically checked by evasi0n. iOS 6.1.3, 6.1.4
  
• A USB cable to connect your iPhone, iPod or iPad to the computer
  

IMPORTANT! Before you start, make sure that…

• you backed up your device using iTunes, iCloud, or alternatively CopyTrans Shelbee. Use the free CopyTrans Shelbee to back up iPhone messages, apps, app documents, contacts, calendar, camera roll and iPhone settings – all without the need for iTunes. Download CopyTrans Shelbee for free
  This way you will always be able to restore the device and recover your data, just in case something goes wrong.
  
• you disabled the passcode lock
  
• you don’t use iTunes or any iOS related programs until you completed the jailbreak
  

Note: If the process gets stuck you can reboot the device by holding down the Power and Home buttons until the device shuts down. Afterwards you can start over again with the jailbreak process.
If you get an error message on Mac stating that evasi0n can’t be opened, right click the app and choose ‘Open’ from the context menu. On the ensuing dialog box, choose “Open” as well.

Let’s start!

1. Extract evasi0n from the zip archive and drag the “evasi0n.exe” file to your desktop
   
2. Double-click the “evasi0n.exe” file to run the program
   
3. Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to the computer and make sure that iTunes and all other programs that could access or sync your iOS device are closed
   
4. Evasi0n will now detect your device and inform you about the model and installed iOS version. If your device is supported you can simply proceed by clicking “Jailbreak”
   
5. The jailbreak process will now start and you’ll have time to get yourself some coffee. Make sure not to touch your device during the different stages of rebooting and uploading Cydia etc
   
6. After about 5 minutes evasi0n will tell you to unlock your device and tap the “Jailbreak” icon that now appears on the home screen. DON’T yet disconnect your device, you’re almost there
   
7. The jailbreaking process continues and a few instants later it’s done! Click “Exit”. You successfully jailbreaked your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch
   
8. On your home screen you will now find a new app called “Cydia”. Tap on it to initialize
   
9. Once done, open Cydia again and select the right user profile (this can be changed afterwards)! A funny thing to start with, is changing the theme of your iOS device. In our case we applied a Wooden Theme to our jailbreaked iPod Touch 5G. Enjoy your unlimited iOS user experience!
